Of course many people visit ancient Rome, but there is more to Rome. Welcome to Villa Borghese. I took a tour with City Wonders and this was the best tour ever. The tour guide was very energetic and informative of the history and art of the Borghese collection. There is so much to share about this villa. I will share the art from Galleria Borghese, the view from the top of Villa Borghese and the grounds of the Villa Borghese.

History of the Borghese

The Borghese family wanted to be Roman; they copied everything from ancient Rome. However they were originally from Sienna. They started with banking, occupying land and became corrupt and wealthy. They also turned into art collectors and became ruthless people in Rome. Sadly for the Borghese, the villa is no longer in the family. It is owned by the city of Rome.

Galleria Borghese

There is so much art to admire in the gallery. Unfortunately, you are given 2 hours to explore because only a certain amount of people are allowed to enter the gallery. My top 5 pieces of art are as follows:

Venus Victorius

This portrays Paolina Bonaparte. She was the sister of Napoleon Bonaparte and former wife of Camillo Borghese. History has it she had multiple affairs. I was mesmerized by its allure and appeal. It is a side of her that appeared hidden but revealed by sculptor Canova.

Sacred Family

I am a Christian and examining the love Mary has in her demeanor while gazing at Baby Jesus was astounding. This was completed by Carracci.

David

David is known for his battle with Goliath and as the boy with the harp in the Bible. I liked this because it depicts him in action. He is ready to sling the rock and has harp on the ground. This sculpture was done by Bernini.

St. Jerome

I, first, saw this work at a Chalkfest art festival in Atlanta last year. I was so surprised to see this here in the gallery. St. Jerome was known for translating the vernacular Bible. The skull signified mortality. The art was done by Caravaggio.

Ratto di Proserpina

The rape of Proserpina by Hades. The term “rape” here means kidnapping. The intensity of her eyes and his hand on her thigh drew me in. I noticed the resistance of her hand and his stance. I was saddened to see this as I listened to a detailed interpretation by the tour guide. This is also done by Bernini.

I love looking out windows. Thank God I did because I would have missed this fantastic view.

The Grounds of Villa Borghese

The villa has so much to offer outside the gallery.  I was not able to venture out to every single part of it. I did enjoy these parts of the villa before heading to my Greek cruise.

There is a lot more to explore of this villa. I did throw a coin into the Trevi fountain so I hope I will return to spend the entire day here. I might grab and bring a picnic basket next time!
