Pearl of the Adriatic: Dubrovnik

Croatia Europe

One of the most beautiful walled cities in the world, full of history, and the pearl of the Adriatic sea; Dubrovnik. During my three month stay in Croatia, visiting this city had to be at the top of my list. I decided to take a few days away from the capital city of Zagreb and head to the Adriatic.

The view from the plane itself had me so excited to explore! As soon as I had the opportunity to walk the streets, I did. The old town is like nothing I have ever seen and I truly felt like I had gone back in time. There was beautiful limestone everywhere I looked, including the slippery streets from the millions of people that have visited. Dubrovnik is pretty small which makes it very easy to roam around without getting lost. After walking the main street, Stradun, I traversed through the narrow streets finding cute little shops full of lavender and tons of delicious gelato. This city will have you in awe in every direction.

The must do attraction while in Dubrovnik is walking the ancient city walls. There are three entrances in various parts of the wall, but I’d recommend entering in front of Onofrio’s fountain, at the beginning of Stradun. It can get quite crowded and warm, so the morning or sunset is probably the best time to visit. The views are incredibly stunning and if you are a fan of the popular TV show Game of Thrones, you won’t want to miss getting the opportunity to find some filming spots. You’ll be able to view fortresses, Lokrum island, and the bell tower.

A local Croatian mentioned that I should take a trip to Lokrum, which is a small island only a short ferry ride away. Some of the most memorable experiences I’ve had while traveling the world come from the local’s recommendations, so I made sure to save some time to visit Lokrum! The boat leaves from the old port, Porporela, every half an hour. There are stunning views and just 15 minutes until you arrive on the island.

Once on the island, there is plenty of exploring to do. Take the climb to Fort Royal, swim in pristine waters, view the Monastery ruins, and even relax at a nude beach! There are also many filming spots from Game of Thrones on the island for those that watch the show. Visiting Lokrum was the cherry on top of my trip to Dubrovnik!

I can truly say that Dubrovnik is magical, fascinating, and a city that you will never forget. Bask in the Croatian beauty and don’t think twice about visiting the Pearl of the Adriatic!
