Sólheimasandur Plane Crash in Iceland

Europe Iceland

The “plane crash” I was in was a plane that had already crashed many years before I was born. The cool part of the story is that this plane crash is in Iceland. Myself and three other girls I had never met before, traveled to Iceland to shoot photographs and explore. We were all photographers, and I also model. This trip was amazing and everyone needs to go to Iceland at least five times in their life. I cannot wait to go back and I really hope it’s sooner rather than later.

The plane crash site was beautiful. The plane was a U.S. Navy plane in the 70’s and it crashed in the southern coast of Iceland. The plane is six miles from the main road, which means six miles of walking. Now, that in itself isn’t awful, kind of long, but not awful. It is a bit of an eerie walk though. You’re walking on flat black sand and nothing but sand around you and hills behind you. Iceland is very quiet. There weren’t many birds around when we went and it was about an hour from sunset. Now, that in itself wasn’t a problem. We went in May, and that time of year, the Icelandic day is 18 hours of sunlight. Between sunset and sunrise, the sky is a pre-dawn/dusk color and never fully dark. We weren’t too worried about running out of sunlight. It is a strange feeling as photographers to not worry about the light situation and to not have to worry about sunset.

As we were driving to the crash, we saw these purple flowers that were growing everywhere on the island. We pulled over, picked some and decided to do a wedding inspired shoot. The photos are of me taken by Anna Szczekutowicz Photography (www.annasz.com) at the Sólheimasandur plane wreck.
